We make around 200 food choices a day, many of which don’t even enter our consciousness because we make them automatically. It’s far easier to create a new habit by mirroring an old habit, even an unconscious one. For example, if you know you tend to eat sweets at 4 p.m. because your energy levels are low, swap the sweets for fruit or nuts instead. If you always have a cup of coffee on the way to work, switch the coffee for water so you can increase your water consumption.

Equally, if you’re trying to make bigger changes to your diet, like increasing your meat-free days, start small and make easy changes. Maybe make one meal a week meat free and build this up to a whole day. It’s better to make small, easy changes that you can stick to than go for all or nothing, as when you succeed in small ways, you will be rewarded with a sense of achievement, have a chance to see the benefits and be motivated to keep with it!
